answers to our most common questions

An accident or injury at some time in a person’s life causes their spine to misalign. It is not necessarily an injury that you would remember.

Examples of injuries are:

  • The birthing process.*
  • A fall as a child. **
  • Falling off a bicycle.
  • Playing sports.
  • Slipping on the ice.
  • Car accidents.
  • Twisting or popping your neck.
  • Hitting your head.

The list goes on and on. It is estimated that greater than 95% of the adult population has a misaligned spine.

*Research indicates that doctors use between 40-70 lbs of pressure on a baby’s head and neck during a non-traumatic delivery.
**Researchers have found the average child falls between 30-40 times per day.

The best way to make sure that there is no distortion in your nervous system is to have your spine check by a NUCCA chiropractor. Some signs that you might have imbalances are tightness that is worse on one side of your body, pain when you move in a certain direction, unequal wear in your shoes or unlevel shoulders when you look in the mirror.

You can also have subluxations and not even know it. Like the early stages of tooth decay or cancer, subluxations can be present before warning signs appear. Body imbalance is determined by leg length disparity and postural distortion..

Yes. Subluxation is known as a silent killer. It may be present for decades before pain or symptoms show up. Just like heart disease and cancer, diseases can be present for many years before a person feels a sign or symptom of the disease process. This is why it is so important to get your body and alignment checked by a NUCCA doctor.

Of course! The best time to have a spinal injury corrected is right after happens. For a lot of us that is when we are little. We encourage parents to bring their children in to have their spines checked as early as possible. Children’s bodies grow at an amazing rate. Early detection and correction will give your children the chance to grow into healthy, happy adults! The early signs of misalignment in little spines include:

  • Sleeping or eating problems.
  • Irritable or fussy.
  • Ear Infections.
  • Allergies/Asthma.
  • Hyperactivity/ADD.
  • Growing Pains.
  • Bed Wetting.
  • No Symptoms (misalignments can be silent.)

For the same reason one is able to move a pile of heavy bricks with a light push of a wheelbarrow: leverage. Although the patient feels only a slight pressure behind their ear while being adjusted, there is adequate force being put into the neck. Using the first vertebra and the weight of the head to gain a biomechanical advantage, the doctor places their own body on a calculated angle to ensure the adjustment is specific to the patient’s individual misalignment. The force generated by the doctor is transferred to the patient in such a gentle and precise fashion that many patients are unaware of any intervention whatsoever.

Absolutely! Precise spinal x-rays are imperative for our adjusting procedures. We are often dealing with misalignments as small as ¾ of a degree, which is 1/10,000 of an inch (The thickness of a fingernail). With such small misalignments the precision x-rays that we take, allow us to calculate the correct method to restore the misalignment to a better position, thus allowing your body to begin the healing process.

Due to special lead filters that block out a majority of the radiation, the radiation exposure is extremely low with our upper cervical x-ray series. The NAS (National Academy of Sciences) considers a single exposure of the whole body of 50,000 mrems (50 rems) to be a high level dose.

  • NUCCA x-ray series – < .22 mrems
  • Flight from LA to Paris  – 4.8 mrems
  • Dental x-ray (whole mouth) – 310 mrems
  • Apollo x moon flight -480 mrems
  • Barium Enema (x-ray study) – 8,000 mrems
  • Radiation treatment for cancer – 6,000,000 mrems

It has been estimated that over 10,000 combinations of atlas misalignments exist. Each combination requires a different, precise spinal correction, which is determined from the thorough analysis of the patient’s x-rays.

The number of adjustments needed varies from person to person. The reasons for this include:

          • Patient compliance (following the doctor’s recommendations.)
          • The amount of damage to the spinal structures.
          • Exercise habits.
          • Spiritual health.
          • Emotional and physical stress.
          • The shape of your spinal bones.

During the initial stabilization period, a number of NUCCA chiropractic corrections may be necessary. Once the spine stabilizes (usually within the first six months), many patients hold their correction for 3 to 6 months at a time. Our corrections generally hold much longer than other types of chiropractic adjustments.

Our patients generally respond very rapidly to the NUCCA chiropractic procedure. The reason for this is because of the precision of the correction. The better the quality of the spinal correction, the better the recovery. Many factors are involved with you feeling better, including:

    • Type and severity of the condition(s)
    • How long you have had the condition
    • What other treatments you have had
    • Medications you are taking
    • Compliance with the doctor’s recommendations
    • Age

Most patients get results with the first spinal correction, but the first six to eight weeks after the initial correction is considered a process of healing and recovery. Body balance will be closely monitored during this period to ensure the correction is maintained and healing continues.

Can I just come in for a quick adjustment?

At Core Chiropractic and Wellness, Dr. Collier specializes in difficult cases and reoccurring health problems that haven’t responded to other types of care, including medical, PT and other forms of chiropractic. Chances are if you are reading this you’ve already tried something else that either didn’t work for you, got you some temporary relief, or got you long term relief but the problem keeps coming back again. If any of those are you, it’s likely that you will need more than one treatment, and instead of doing a quick “crack” that might get you some temporary relief, only to come back or get worse, Dr. Collier would rather carefully study your case to figure out what you need, and deliver high quality care with tailor made adjustments, based on measurements, instead of just guessing. If a quick one time adjustment with no measurements, or analysis is all you want, we may not be the right office for you, and we would be happy to refer you to other chiropractors in the area that may be a better fit. Our standard of care is high, because your health is at stake.

Yes. Rest assured that your NUCCA chiropractor is specifically trained to deliver a completely safe and gentle spinal correction which requires no bending, twisting or cracking of the spine. Our staff of doctors will also communicate with other health professionals if there are any possible contradictions that we are concerned about.

What conditions does NUCCA chiropractic treat?

Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.s) care for patients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions. Chiropractors are especially well known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches. They also get great results with migraines, vertigo, TMJ, fibromyalgia, post concussion syndrome, POTS, dysautonomia, dystonia, brain fog and more. On top of traditional chiropractic training Dr. Collier has completed post graduate training in NUCCA and Torque Release Technique (TRT). NUCCA and TRT doctors have specialized training to give them a more in-depth understanding of the upper neck, brain stem and the relationship between the head and the neck.

Because of this specialization NUCCA doctors tend to help people with a variety of chronic health conditions that have not responded to medical or general chiropractic treatment such as vertigo, migraines, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, trigeminal neuralgia and other conditions. They also care for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments and joints. These painful conditions often involve or impact the nervous system, which can cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury. The benefits of NUCCA chiropractic care extend beyond the care of patients with these conditions.  Improving the integrity of the spine has a tremendous impact on maintaining long term health, function and immunity.

    Do adjustments hurt?

Dr. Collier’s extensive training in NUCCA allows for extremely gentle adjustments to be performed. This is especially important for patients that have anxiety about getting their neck adjusted.  The NUCCA adjustment feels like putting slow pressure on the side of the neck with a finger. The only discomfort with the adjustment is related to the way the body responds in the few days following the correction, and it feels similar to after-workout soreness.  In most cases patients feel relief immediately following treatment.

    Do you take insurance?

We work with a variety of insurance companies; however, chiropractic coverage varies from plan to plan. We are a fee-for service office meaning all of our patients pay with cash, check or credit card at the time of service. Our office staff will complete all the necessary paperwork in order for you to get reimbursed from your insurance company based on your insurance plan. We do offer several payment plans to help you get all the care you need and pay for it over the course of your care.
